Common garbage disposal problems
Jammed disposal (hums but won't spin). This is the most common disposal call. A hard piece of food waste, a small bone fragment, a piece of silverware, or another foreign object has lodged between the grinding ring and the turntable. The motor runs but the grinding chamber can't turn. The built-in thermal overload has usually tripped as well. Before calling us, try the self-service steps: push the reset button on the unit's base, then use the 1/4-inch hex wrench (in the drawer, shipped with most disposals,) to manually rotate the turntable from the access port at the bottom until you feel the jam break free. If that clears it and the disposal runs normally after reset, you're done. If it doesn't clear, call us.
Disposal won't turn on at all. If the disposal makes no sound when switched on, check the reset button first. If the button pops back out immediately after being pushed, the overload is still tripped from a prior jam or a recent power interruption. Let the unit cool for 10 minutes and try again. If it still won't reset, the motor or switch has likely failed.
Disposal leaks. Leaks at the sink flange connection above the disposal are usually dried-out plumber's putty or a loose mounting ring; these are inexpensive fixes. Leaks at the dishwasher inlet port or the drain outlet below are fitting issues, also inexpensive. A leak at the bottom of the disposal body itself indicates internal seal failure, which on most residential models means replacement is more practical than repair.
Grinding performance declining. A disposal that grinds poorly and clears slowly may have worn grinding teeth or accumulated hard scale from PAW's moderately hard Schuylkill River source water. Running ice cubes through the disposal periodically helps clear scale, but if grinding performance has declined significantly, replacement is usually the right call for a unit more than 10 years old.
New disposal installation and older Pottstown kitchens
Adding a disposal to a kitchen sink that didn't previously have one requires replacing the basket strainer with a disposal mounting flange, mounting the disposal body to the flange, connecting the drain outlet to the existing P-trap or a modified one, and wiring the unit to a switched outlet or a wall switch. If the kitchen has a dishwasher, we knock out the dishwasher drain inlet port and connect the dishwasher drain hose to the disposal.
Older Pottstown rowhome kitchens sometimes have cast iron drain lines beneath the sink rather than PVC. Cast iron drains need compatible fittings that seal properly against the older pipe material. We assess the drain configuration during the estimate and include any needed adapter fittings in the installation price. No surprises on installation day.
We install InSinkErator Badger and Evolution series, Moen, and Waste King units. For replacement installations, we can work with a unit you provide or supply one from stock. If you supply the unit, provide the installation specifications so we can confirm it's compatible with your drain configuration before the visit.

Frequently asked questions
My disposal hums but won't spin. What is wrong?
A disposal that hums but does not spin has a jammed grinding chamber. Something hard is lodged between the grinding ring and the turntable. Push the reset button on the base of the unit, then use a 1/4-inch Allen key in the bottom port to manually rotate the turntable until the jam breaks free. If that clears it and the disposal runs after resetting, you're done. If not, the jam may be more severe or the motor may have been damaged, and we can come assess it.
How long do garbage disposals last?
Most residential disposals last 8 to 15 years depending on quality, usage, and what goes through them. Pottstown's moderately hard water from the Schuylkill River source adds some wear to internal seals and bearings over time. Units used heavily and grinding hard waste reach the lower end of that range; lighter-use units often exceed a decade. A disposal over 10 years old with a significant repair need is usually a replacement candidate.
My disposal is leaking at the bottom. Is it worth repairing?
A leak at the bottom of the disposal body indicates internal seal failure. Replacing those internal seals is not practical on most residential units because the cost approaches or exceeds replacement. A bottom leak is typically a replacement situation. Leaks at the sink flange above or the drain connection below are different: those are fitting leaks that are inexpensive to repair and don't mean the unit itself is failing.
Can you add a disposal to an older Pottstown kitchen sink?
Yes. We replace the basket strainer with a disposal mounting flange, install the unit, connect it to the drain and dishwasher (if applicable), and confirm the drain handles the load. Older Pottstown rowhome kitchens often have cast iron drain lines; we assess the configuration and include any needed adapter fittings in the estimate so there are no surprises.
